O pastor, que fundou a Igreja evangélica pentecostal Ministério Porta Aberta há seis anos, foi preso por policiais militares do 3º Batalhão de Parnamirim no dia 11 de janeiro deste ano, quando estava no carro com duas meninas - uma de 11 e outra de 10 anos. Os policiais viram o carro do acusado parado perto de uma faculdade em Parnamirim e acharam estranho. De acordo com o Boletim de Ocorrência, os policiais se aproximaram do carro e viram uma criança no colo do acusado, que logo ficou sentada ao seu lado. Quandos os PMs chegaram, Manoel estava fechando o zíper de sua calça e alegou que o carro estava quebrado. Isso foi desmentido quando um policial conseguiu ligar o veículo.
Ele conseguiu escapar da prisão e a Secretaria de Segurança do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte entrou em contato com o delegado da 64ª DP (Vilar dos Teles), André Drumond, que iniciou a busca do criminoso. Antes de ser condenado pela Justiça do Rio Grande do Norte, Manuel esteve preso por dez anos no Rio de Janeiro, acusado de vários crimes: apropriação indébita; vadiagem, falsidade ideológica, uso de documento falso, estelionato, roubo duplamente qualificado, porte de arma de fogo; furto e falsificação de documento público.
